Finns work towards a unified language industry body

The Association of Finnish Translation Companies SKTOL and KITES, association of Finnish companies working in the fields of multilingual communication and language technology, are negotiationing to join forces and found a new association of language service providers in 2017.

From the start of 2017, both associations have been worked closely together to provide the basis for a new association. With this in mind and to discuss the future of the language services sector, SKTOL and Kites Association convened a Leaders' Forum of the sector’s leaders.

This ground-breaking gathering took place at the end of January. Finnish language service providers have never met at such a high level to discuss common issues. The historic meeting brought together the key decision-makers of 30 language service providers operating in Finland. They included executives from translation and language technology companies, interpretation services, language schools and universities.

The Leader Forum’s delegates discussed how they could work together to promote and develop the sector and its operating conditions to the advantage of language service providers and their customers as well as the universities that provide training and conduct research. The objective is to increase awareness of the language sector and improve the conditions under which it operates and the international competitiveness of the sector’s businesses. The language sector plays a central role in the internationalisation of Finnish companies. The Leader Forum’s delegates agreed that there is a need for a new, stronger association and welcomed closer co-operation between all members of the sector on the one hand and the language service companies providing jobs to language professionals on the other.
